You can take progressive ideology out of Europe but you can’t take Europeans out of progressive ideology. While the Germans are currently the big dog in the EU, they nevertheless revert to why the European model of socialism is a failed and miserable model.

Angela Merkel

Desperate for more sources of capital to feed their insatiable tax appetite, Frau Merkel has leveled her tax claws on yet another rich source of funds—news aggregators.  Businesses like The Drudge Report, Times 24/7, Real Clear Politics, Digg, Fark and Reddit are fabulously popular and successful because they epitomize the capitalistic credo; invent something faster, better smarter and you will make money. So it should come as no surprise when governments, afflicted with an insatiable appetite for taxes to fund their out-of-control spending, come pounding at the door looking for fresh funds. Any industry that becomes financially successful is going to be the target of these governments. Politicians will disguise their motives with altruistic explanations for the taxing when the real reasons are simply greed and the fact they can.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

“Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.”  Attributed to: Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee

We are at the end of this cycle. The path we choose will decide the future for another 200 years. I for one will not succumb to bondage.

Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee
