I haven’t had many ponderous posts lately, probably because I haven’t allowed myself to be ponderous and that I’m just lazy.

I saw a tweet yesterday morning announcing a  crash at a naval air station in Nevada. Curious, I went to the story and read that it was a civilian pilot contracted to the Navy training their Top Gun pilots at Naval Air Station Fallon. I didn’t think much more about it other than feeling sad for the unnamed pilot and our military in general. Then this morning I read that a military blogger (milblogger), popular with another blog I read every day, died in a plane crash yesterday.

The deceased pilot was Carroll “Lex” LeFon, a/k/a Neptunus Lex. This guy would fly the ‘enemy planes’ and our naval guys would practice shooting him down. I had not ever read his blog before this morning.

What struck me was how fleeting our experience is on this earth. We take it so much for granted.  LeFon’s  last blog post was questioning Attorney Eric Holder’s explanation of yet another in the endless attacks on our freedoms from the Obama administration. His second to last post was a recant of a minor emergency while landing the previous day. With all the coolness of a Top Gun pilot, he explains the issue, evaluates his choices and executes his remedy—in just a paragraph he proves why he’s qualified to fly in the rarefied air of the best of the best. Both of these posts must have been written just hours before his fateful flight yesterday.

And then, something goes terribly wrong and a highly skilled, eminently qualified pilot is lost in the blink of an eye.  We may or may not find out the cause. Judging from this man’s skill and experience I would put mechanical failure way above human error. Whatever, it doesn’t change the outcome; it just gives us another reminder to love our friends and family every day. Tell them you love them, show them you love them. Smile at strangers, hold a door for someone. Today is the most important day of your life.
