They say any press is good press, right?

Well I got some…front page no less.

I attended the West Palm Beach Tea Party yesterday afternoon. An estimated crowd of 1000 fed-up Floridians amassed to show their displeasure for the current Administration. I made a sign and waded into the crowd enjoying my first ever ‘protest’. Little did I know it would have been like blowing through a no-wake zone at top speed.

Yep, that's me.

Yep, that's me.

That sign caught the eye of two reporters. The first was from the Palm Beach Post, our local daily. The reporter, Charles Elmore, asked me  standard questions and I obliged with what I knew would be a juicy sound bite. The next reporter approached me about ten minutes later.   He said he had taken a picture of me and wanted to get my story. He introduced himself as Joe Kovacs, a reporter from WorldNetDaily.com. It’s a news service I knew had a reputation for the sensational.  Ooooh baby, my heart raced!  As I was venting my spleen, Joe stopped me and asked if he could record our conversation. I was beginning to get giddy. You stick a microphone in my face and suddenly I think I’m on ‘Amercian Idol‘. I knew ‘ol Joe was looking for some red meat so I made sure I gave him some. It’s called ‘tailoring the message to the messenger’ and I can tell you, my past experience in the media and as a salesman paid off.  Both news organizations quoted me in stories about the local Tea Party including an above the fold, front page story in the Post with my quote as the secondary headline!

I just wished I had worked in my blog address into the story…

Following directions April 15, 2009

Yep, I’m your typical guy.  I don’t follow directions, I don’t ask for directions and I don’t take directions. Of course that usually gets me into trouble every time.

Since I shirked fulfilling my first task in Darren Rowse’s Build a Better Blog Challenge, I’m all messed up.  Three days ago I was supposed to come up with my ‘pitch’ or what my blog is all about.  The obvious result would be to help focus me and my readers and lay the base for future exercises.

“If you’re fuzzy on what your blog is about it’s unlikely that anyone else will have much of an idea either.” Darren Rowse

So true Darren, so true. And now I find myself attempting to fulfill day 4’s challenge and I realized without my ‘pitch’  defined, I’m up the creek without a paddle. Now I’m forced to face the music and come up with my pitch…what’s my blog all about?

How about this….

A compilation of heartwarming stories that touch on the important things in my life—all presented in a humorous, smartly written collection, sure to find favor with the most discriminate reader.

That’s the pompous-ass pitch.

An eclectic taste-test, seasoned with equal parts of humor and humility.

That’s the elevator version.

Amusing musings.

That’s my alliterative version.

Now, with my blog’s identity clearly defined, I’m ready to tackle Day Four’s challenge…seek out and observe like minded blogs so as to glean tips and emulate their success.

Wish me luck.

Harry Kalas – RIP April 13, 2009

A great voice has been silenced and will be missed greatly.

Harold Norbert “Harry” Kalas, 73, died today doing what he loved. The famed announcer was taken to the hospital from the Philadelphia Philly’s announcer’s booth where he was pronounced dead.

I’ve been a fan of Mr. Kalas for as long as I can remember. I have always had a secret desire to be a voice talent and Mr. Kalas was one of the best. His narration of NFL films was what made those vignettes so awesome and I personally believe he was responsible for the ‘bigger than life’ persona that those films portrayed.

I offer my sincerest condolences to the Kalas family.

Lesson #2 – The List Post April 13, 2009

Darren Rowse’s second exercise in his 31 Days to Build a Better Blog is to post a list within your blog.

Normally that would be an easy assignment. However, since I haven’t completed the first exercise, which was to develop the ‘pitch’ for the blog or the raison d’etre for the blog in the first place…I’m having difficulties.

I’ll admit, the number one reason I’m having difficulty making my list is because I didn’t do my homework.

#2. Would probably have to do with my proclivity to procrastinate.

#3. Shiny objects tend to distract me.

#4. Every time I do a web search on any subject I end up on a porno site.

#5. The rest of my day is pretty much shot after spending five hours scrubbing my hard drive of nasty, malicious viruses.

#6. The docs are still tweaking my narcolepsy meds…

#7. There is actually a website for narcoleptic swingers.

#8. I made that last one up.

#9. My next blog will be about narcoleptic swingers.

#10. I think I now know why David Letterman doesn’t answer my e-mails.

Lesson #1 – My Pitch April 13, 2009

Blogging. Up to now I did it for fun.  It was a creative outlet that let me exercise my brain and bare my soul. Now I want to make money from it. Inspired by the successes of various bloggers who have developed blogs that create enough traffic to generate advertising revenue, I’m ready for my slice of the blog pie.

I signed up for Darren Rowse’s 31 Days to Build a Better blog Challenge. Darren is an Aussie blogger who has successfully become a professional blogger.  His blog, ProBlogger.net, is a Blog that helps bloggers  add income streams to their blogs.

That description is Darren’s pitch which happens to be the Day 1 exercise in his 31 Days to Build a Better blog Challenge.

Darren is asking all participants to come up with a pitch for their blog.

This has forced me to look back at my postings and honestly ask myself if anything I have written is worthy of anyone else’s interest.  Well, they laughed at the Pet Rock and Billy the Big Mouth Bass.

William Hung

William Hung and Sanjaya Malakar had their 15 minutes of fame. And in a brilliant flash of capitalistic genius, 21-year-old student Alex Tew from Wiltshire, England came up with the The Million Dollar Homepage.

So here I am forced to self-evaluate. I need to come up with a pitch that succinctly sums up my blog. Like Darren says, “If you’re fuzzy on what your blog is about it’s unlikely than anyone else will have much of an idea either.”
